Is Botox Safe For You? Know These Details About Botox

Everyone has heard of Botox, this is the injection system in which strains of the botulism bacteria are injected into a certain site in order to paralyze the muscles in that area. This can cause swelling and discomfort for a time with results typically lasting for a few months. Botox is very popular non-surgical treatment, which is cosmetic by nature. It is exceptionally good to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Botulinum toxin is prepared to make Botox injection. The powder is diluted in saline solution and this mixture is directly injected into the neuromuscular tissue. The chemical kicks into action, blocking nerve transmission in nearby muscles, effectively freezing the area.

After the injection moves from the dermis and into the desired muscle, the nerves there are blocked – rather, their synapses, are blocked – by the Botox. So even though your brain may fire and signal for your body to move a particular muscle, Botox effectively blocks that firing and keeps the muscle from moving. The injected muscle can no longer contract, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften, and also helps prevent new ones from forming.

Botulinum toxin is damaging for health but in a small dosage, as used in Botox is typically free from side effects. The adverse cases of side effects are very less. Most of the times, an underlying health condition and not the Botox cause the reported side effects cases.

Make sure that you are going to a certified doctor for getting Botox injections. The risk of side effects increases when you go to an unauthorized person for Botox or when injections aren’t prepared according to the standards.

Do not go for Botox treatment when you are pregnant, breastfeeding or are under 18 years of age.

Botox injections are relatively safe when performed by an experienced doctor. Possible side effects include:

  • Pain, swelling or bruising at the injection site
  • Headache or flu-like symptoms
  • Droopy eyelid or cockeyed eyebrows
  • Crooked smile or drooling
  • Eye dryness or excessive tearing

Although very unlikely, it’s possible for the effect of botulinum toxin to spread to other parts of the body and cause botulism-like signs and symptoms. Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these effects hours to weeks after receiving Botox:

  • Muscle weakness all over the body
  • Vision problems
  • Trouble speaking or swallowing
  • Trouble breathing
  • Loss of bladder control

Select your doctor carefully

Botox must be used only under a doctor’s care. It’s important that injections be placed precisely in order to avoid side effects. Botox therapy can be dangerous if it’s administered incorrectly. Look for a doctor who specializes in your condition and who has experience in administering Botox treatments.

Before the procedure

Most people tolerate the injection discomfort well. But you may want your skin to be numbed beforehand, especially if your palms or soles are being treated for excessive sweating. Your doctor might use one or more of various methods available to numb the area, such as topical anesthesia, ice and vibration anesthesia, which uses massage to reduce discomfort.

During the procedure

Your doctor uses a thin needle to inject tiny amounts of botulinum toxin into your skin or muscles. The number of injections needed depends on many factors, including the extent of the area being treated. Botox injections are usually done in a doctor’s office.

After the procedure

Expect to resume your normal daily activities right after the procedure. Take care, though, not to rub or massage the treated areas. This can cause the toxin to migrate to a different area.

Botulinum toxin injections usually begin working a few days after treatment. Depending on the problem being treated, the effect may last three months or longer. To maintain the effect, you’ll need regular follow-up injections.
