‘Maskne‘ is real! How to fight breakouts, if your mask is causing acne.
Is Wearing a Face Mask Causing Breakouts? Here Are Some Ways to Help Prevent Maskne
Maskne (mask acne): it’s a real term and an actual issue on the rise as more people are wearing masks for longer periods of time. It is caused by the combination of rubbing from the mask, which irritates the skin barrier, as well as the hot moisture trapped inside, which dilates the pores and allows bacteria and oil to clog them up. Once the follicles are trapped with gunk, they become inflamed, leading to nasty breakouts.
Acne mechanica – the technical term for maskne – was originally referred to when describing the acne football players would get where their helmet rubs, is now an issue for many others wearing a mask. Masks can worsen skin issues that already exist or cause new ones. Add in the summer heat and humidity and you’ve got a perfect equation for breakouts.
Tips to avoid mask acne
- Wash your masks. If you’re using a cloth or reusable mask, be sure to wash it in the washing machine and dry it completely after every use. If you’re using a disposable mask, it’s tempting to re-use it. However, it could be a breeding ground for bacteria, so you should throw it away after wearing it. Cotton masks allow the skin to breathe best.
- Use gentle skin care products. These don’t have to be expensive or fancy. Light, gentle, non-oily cleansers are best, and look for ones that are fragrance-free. Try to avoid wearing makeup such as foundation when wearing a mask so your skin is able to breathe.
- Wash your face. Gently cleanse your skin twice a day, morning and night with the fingertips only. Avoid scrubs or cloths to clean your skin. Don’t use heavy oil-containing products, like cocoa butter or coconut oil, and skip any kind of oil-based foundation. Use moisturizers or makeup products that are lightweight and oil-free. After applying moisturizer or sunscreen, wait at least 15 minutes before putting your mask on.
- Stick to the basics. At night after cleaning with gentle products, it’s ok to put on a moisture-rich cream to repair the skin barrier and hold in moisture
- Wear less makeup. The skin under your mask is not getting much air – top that by adding makeup is a double negative. Sweating underneath your mask, having no or less makeup on will better your chance of avoiding breakouts.

Many scientific studies have shown that a combined treatment for acne usually produces better results than a single therapy approach. This contributes to a reduction in comedogenic lesions and inflammation causing factors, thus enabling optimal restructuring of the skin, which prevents subsequent scarring.

IPL stands for intense pulsed light. If you’ve got vascular acne scars, or those red or pink marks commonly found on fairer skin tones, IPL Photofacial is the treatment for you. It’s very effective at targeting the pigmented cells left behind after acne lesions disappear. IPL Photofacial Acne Treatment enhances skin tone and reduce imperfections caused by acne and scarring. The procedure uses superficial wavelengths to kill bacteria, stimulate new cell turnover, and reduce redness while promoting the sloughing of dead skin cells. Patients report a rejuvenated and fresh look and feel to their skin with a significant reduction in discolourations, breakouts and scarring.
Microneedling, also known as collagen-induction therapy, is a semi-invasive procedure that has been used effectively for decades. This treatment can help treat acne, acne marks, scars, wrinkles, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, age spots, acne, rosacea, and pore size. Microneedling can be uncomfortable, but it is not painful. The sensation is similar to a quick sting or small bug bite. A topical numbing cream can be applied to the skin to ease discomfort. Hyaluronic acid serum may also be applied to help the microneedling device glide over the skin. A typical microneedling session lasts approximately 60 minutes.
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive mechanical exfoliation acne treatment that uses high quality corundum crystals to remove dead skin cells on the surface of your skin and to stimulate healthy cell turnover. Microdermabrasion improves minor textural issues and overall skin tone and can help in the treatment and reduction of acne as well as the overall improvement of scarring, leaving dull skin looking and feeling completely renewed.
Pixel Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing
Pixel® Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing is one of revolutionary FDA-approved fractional laser treatments that can smooth out acne scars, clear years of sun damage, such as age spots, shrink the appearance of pores, reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Pixel laser resurfacing, also known as fractional laser, uses the science behind micro thermal lasers that uses small pulses of intense heat to target multiple very-small areas of the skin and cause tiny fractures or ruptures below the skin’s surface. The surrounding skin goes into recovery mode and rapidly creates new collagen the heal the damaged skin, thereby smoothing the overall appearance of the skin, improve tone and texture, reduce wrinkles and UV damage, and correct pigment issues.
A chemical peel treatment can be used on both face and body to improve both skin tone and texture and is a highly-effective treatment for acne and scarring. By removing the surface layer, we allow the skin to regenerate. Chemical peels are not recommended for patients currently experiencing high to severe breakouts. A chemical peel treatment goes deeper into the layers of the skin than a mechanical exfoliation such as microdermabrasion and may require some recovery time after the session. Peels come in a variety of strengths for different skin concerns, and can be tailored to your lifestyle and overall facial needs.
