• Avoid tanning and using sunless tanners for at least a month to prepare for laser hair removal. The skin should be as light as possible at the time of treatment. For this reason, many people choose to undergo laser treatment during winter.
• Refrain from plucking or waxing your skin. Shaving is fine, but these other hair removal techniques can reduce the effectiveness of the laser treatment. Also, the hair should not be bleached.
• Shave the area that will be treated, as instructed during the pre-treatment consultation. This is usually a day or two before the appointment. The hair follicles should be visible.
• Do not use skin care products on the area to be treated. This includes moisturizers, oils, makeup, perfumes, deodorant, antiperspirant, or powder, depending on the area being treated. If you use any kind of topical medication on your skin, be sure to notify your patient consultation when scheduling your laser hair removal appointment.

Your laser specialists will provide you with specific follow-up care instructions. Below are some general guidelines for what you can expect as you heal.
After your treatment, expect to be able to resume your normal daily activities. You will notice redness as side effect at the treatment site, which should resolve in a day or two. Keep in mind, you can manage any discomfort that you have with wrapped ice packs or gel packs (do not apply ice directly to skin). Also, you may bathe and shower as usual, but keep in mind that the treated area may be temperature sensitive.
Until redness has resolved, avoid the following:

• Sun exposure and tanning on the treated area. Apply an SPF 45 or greater sunscreen to prevent injury to the treatment area and to prevent changes in pigmentation.
• Applying cosmetics to the treated area.
• Swimming, especially in pools with chemicals such as chlorine.
• Hot tubs, Jacuzzis, and saunas.
• Activities that cause excess perspiration or any activity that may raise your core body temperature.
• Aggressive scrubbing and use of exfoliates on the treated area.

We typically recommend a series of 6 treatments every 6 weeks for new patients. Due to the normal hair growth cycle, touchup sessions may be needed to ensure all unwanted hair is successfully removed.
