What does fractional resurfacing mean exactly?

Fractional resurfacing lasers are very exciting because they offer significant skin improvements with relatively little to no downtime. Compared to traditional resurfacing lasers that target the entire skin surface, fractional devices only target small areas of the skin (like individual pixels in a camera) with each laser pass. The idea behind this technology is that if only a fraction of the entire skin surface is hit with the laser then the healing time will be much faster and the downtime greatly reduced. The normal skin surrounding these laser hot spots will in essence allow for more effective tissue healing and production of collagen.

What can fractional laser be used to treat?

Skin resurfacing and rejuvenation can be achieved in a number of ways, ranging from laser, light and other energy-based treatments to a variety of chemical peels. Ablative and non-ablative treatments help rejuvenate the skin and reduce the effects of the sun, aging, and a variety facial skin disorders. The breakthrough technology of Pixel® Fractional Laser has replaced older techniques. Pixel® 2940 is one of the revolutionary skin treatments from Alma Lasers that offers you the chance to look younger, healthier and let your inner radiance free.

The Pixel® 2940 machine is used for the treatment known as skin rejuvenation, which includes:

  • the reduction and possible removal of fine lines and wrinkles,
  • improvement of deeper wrinkles, repair of sun damaged skin,
  • the reduction of age spots and blemishes, acne scars and hyperpigmentation (areas of darker pigment or brown patches in the skin).

Unlike traditional ablative lasers, used only on the face, the Pixel® 2940 is targeted at treatments on the face, neck, chest, arms and hands, giving it a wider scope for treating aged and sun damaged skin. This fractional method damages only certain zones within the selected target area, (producing tiny white dot, or pixel-like treated areas on the skin), leaving the other zones within it perfectly intact. Therefore only treating approximately 20% of the skin within the treatment area. This allows the skin to heal much faster than if the whole area was treated, as the ‘healthy’ untreated tissue surrounding the treated zones helps to fill in the damaged area with new cells. This causes collagen remodelling, skin tightening and an improvement in skin texture as the area heals.

Pixel Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing can also shrink the appearance of pores and smooth out acne scars, giving you the soft and flawless skin of years gone by. Faster healing is achieved and downtime is minimized. VS MedSpa uses state of the art technology and highly trained and experienced medical staff to bring you the best results from the skin resurfacing treatment.

How does fractional laser skin resurfacing work?

It works by creating thousands of microscopic perforations, but the skin around each of these perforations remains intact. This allows your skin’s top layer to heal from the edge of these tiny holes very rapidly, which significantly improves your complexion.

In more detail, the Pixel laser light passes through patented optics to penetrate the skin with tiny channels, only as deep as a few sheets of paper. In each channel it creates a micro-injury, without disturbing the surrounding tissue.

These micro-injury sites (about 15–20 percent of the treatment area) start the process of healing. As collagen remodels, skin tightens and scars improve. The intact, undamaged skin around the treatment site is what promotes quicker healing for a faster recovery.

Treatment regime

Multiple treatment sessions are required with Pixel® 2940 to obtain optimal results.

A treatment programme of 3 – 5 treatments, spaced 1 – 4 weeks apart is recommended by the manufacturers to achieve the best results for indications such as sun damage, acne scars, enlarged pores and rough skin texture, fine lines and pigmentation.

The number of treatment sessions required depends upon the individual patient and the condition undergoing treatment; your practitioner will be able to create an appropriate treatment regime for you.
